Today was our "girls day out" - which is every Thursday for the woman that volunteer here. We really wanted some "western" food as they all it in Taiwan, so Ted took us to a cute restaurant in Luo-Dong. That's the town that the orphanage is in. I saw they had spaghetti on the menu and was soooo excited!! So I ordered the spaghetti Our meals also came with soup, salad, coffee tea/juice, and dessert. I have been waiting all week for this meal and planned on eating every last bit of it!
The soup was Cream of Mushroom. I have never had that before so I was leery, but it was really delicious! We then had our salads brought out. It was good overall, except the part where they forgot to mention they put tuna on it! YUCK! I scraped it off and ate the rest. Then the "spaghetti" came. It was not what I was expecting at all, but I tried it anyway. Overall, it was decent, but I only ate about 1/2 of it. Then they brought out my orange juice which was yellow and tasted like tang. It was really good and probably tasted so good because I have only had water here (and 1 coke). They also had "water" on the table to drink with your meal, but they forgot to tell us that it was peach-flavored water.......awkward. We were all taken back a little with the first sip. It was weird.
Then they brought out dessert and it was my favorite!!! WAFFLES! They had drizzled chocolate and syrup on them and put sprinkles on them. It was like heaven :) Below are some pics of our lunch.
After lunch we walked down the sidewalk to a bakery and sampled some amazing breads and cakes. It was such a cute little store and was booming with customers! I heard its the best one around.
I also noticed that there were a lot of "fire-pits" alongside the road in front of peoples shops and stores. I was told that the people were burning their money to send to the Buddhist gods. They were literally burning wads of money at a time!!! The streets filled with the smell of burnt paper throughout the day. It was very interesting. I guess it's their way of "Tithing". It made me appreciate the fact that I have a God who I can talk to anytime and don't need to do things like that to please Him. I have actually learned a lot about their customs and beliefs here in Taiwan as many of the people are Buddhist. They also have fireworks they set off all the time day and night. I thought it was just for fun - but later found out they do that to scare away the demons from the Buddhist temples in the mountains. Just very interesting.
We then went to the "market" which is basically like an outside mall........with people driving their mopeds through it. Kind of crazy, but it was really fun. I didn't buy anything yet, but was very tempted because they have such cute clothes, shoes, and purses!!! We also got ice-cream, which was very different than in the US. It tastes similar to dip-n-dots, but looked like shredded pork (just in different colors). Below is a pic.
We then headed to starbucks where we talked and relaxed on a rainy day :)
I also got some candy from the Family Mart store and it was really good!! Tastes like starbursts.
We took a cab back to the orphanage where I played with Grayson the rest of the evening. I am just amazed and overwhelmed with joy that he is ours. God truly picked out the perfect son for us. He is so happy and laughed all the time. He is very patient when I am feeding other babies and just enjoys being a baby. The only time he cries is when he first wakes up or when he is really tired and all of the girls are trying to keep him awake until bedtime :) He is beginning to cuddle with me at night and gets really excited when I walk in the room. Melts my heart.
We continue to wait for our first decree to come. Please continue to pray for a speedy court process and that we can be home by Christmas! We are missing our family dearly, but LOVE our skype dates with everyone!
Love to all
Lindsay & Grayson
